This letter was sent by Michael Malitsky Sensei to the dojo membership on August 29, 2025
Dear Members,
I have had the honor and the privilege of leading first the Genseikan, and then Gendokan dojo, for roughly 22 (or 23?) years. The experience has been, at times, frightening, rewarding, humbling, entertaining, frustrating, deeply educational, and overall enlightening. I am most grateful for the privilege of being able to call many of you not just students, or peers, or partners, but Friends.
It is time to pass the torch. Lowry Sensei is assuming the responsibilities of the chief instructor, and Epstein Sensei those of the dojo-cho. The two roles are frequently performed by the same person, and thus frequently confused as being one and the same. This is an appropriate moment to explain the difference. The role of the (chief) instructor is self-explanatory. The dojo-cho is the person responsible for the operation of the dojo – scheduling, facilities, dues, legal matters, records, finances, etc – something like an office manager in today’s business world. Both roles involve a significant amount of time and effort, on and off the mat.
Please recognize the commitment these two gentlemen are undertaking, and the work they will be putting in. Give them your support, assistance, and appreciation – this is the only compensation they will receive.
On the personal front, I am preparing to move the family residence, probably in the spring of 2026. In the meantime, I will continue teaching and training at Gendokan as my travel schedule permits. After the move, I anticipate visiting from time to time.
See you on the mat!
Sincerely,
Michael Malitsky
