Saturday Workshop Series

Hi folks,

After the success of our Kumijo workshop in September, we are making these events more regular. Starting this Saturday, October 18, Great Lakes Aikido will dedicate the last two Saturday practices a month to Oyowaza and Aikido Weapons work (moving around major holidays).

These two hour sessions are free to current members but also open to visitors from other dojos for a session fee. We do ask that you register online (links below and in our calendar) for these events so we know how many people to expect.

Currently, our schedule for the rest of the year will be:

Oyowaza (応用技) literally applied or practical techniques, refers to the application of basic technique in response to more realistic/modern attacks than practiced in standard Aikido partnered kata. The principle is to begin learning to adapt to real-world conditions without losing the core principles of Aikido.

Aikido Weapons sessions will focus on techniques or katas with bokken (木剣, wooden sword), jō (杖, staff), and tantō (短刀, short sword/dagger). Individual session topics will be announced closer to the date. Please bring weapons if you have them.

All are welcome to attend but note that these workshops are primarily intended for those with prior experience in Aikido.

Best,

Daniel
